Inspiring Bedrooms

This bedroom has a soft, space-enlarging palette. Sage striped bedding, a silk quilt, and velvet damask pillows contribute pattern and comfort to the bed. Framing the window are sheer linen drapes, which offer privacy when closed—as well as views and filtered light.

This extra bedroom deftly balances traditional and contemporary styles. A 7-foot-high expanse of gray-painted wainscot tempers the bold red wall color, while the geometric-print chair fabric, bright paisley bedspread, and accent pillows perk up a dark-paneled bed. The windows were kept simple with soft-fabric louvered coverings that control the light and afford privacy.

This master bedroom looks out through French doors onto its own porch.

A motif based on the number three gives an underlying order to the design elements in this master bedroom: the double-hung windows are six over six; a stack of three framed artworks hangs between the windows; and the artwork above the bed is composed of nine panels. A simple platform bed has a contemporary presence.

The furnishings in this room, all by Baker, blend a variety of traditional styles. A stunning sunburst mirror presides over the two-poster queen-size mahogany bed. “With a vaulted ceiling, it’s best to bring large elements up into the space above the bed,” says the designer. The pine floors were left bare for easy cleaning and to contribute to the tranquil atmosphere.

A new window scaled to the width of the bed and another salvaged one from a kitchen remodel bring new light into this bedroom. Heavy Belgian linen curtains are a few shades darker than the wall; an area rug rests atop wall-to-wall sea grass.

Bright welcoming color and the basic elements (A clock, a radio, a book or two, a comfortable easy chair and a lamp) is all this guest room needs for decoration and functionality.
